Information about the Region

Aubeterre

History

The village dates back to the 12th century, and is built in the shape of an amphitheatre.  This former stronghold is now classified as one of France's prettiest villages.  The streets in Aubeterre are quite steep but the walks are never the less picturesque.

One of the features of Aubeterre is its rare monolithic church that was carved from a single piece of rock.  The church of St Jean is built into the steep sides of the cliff which forms part of the village, at the highest point the main nave reaches 20m.

Open every day (including Sundays and Bank Holidays)
9.30 am to midday and 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.

Restaurants

There are various places to eat, for the day time and also for evening dining I would recommend the following:

Sel et Sucres - Main Square, crepes and french snacks.

Le Creperie - French crepes and home-made dishes, try the sharing plates, they make a lovely change from normal salad style dishes.  Down to the square, bear left and it is on your right, 10 metres from Sel et Sucres - English run

Pizzeria - Specializes in Italian style pizzas - through the square towards the Charcuterie and up the lane about 10 metres.

Hotel Du Perigord - Featured in the Michelin Guide.  Excellent gourmet cuisine, set menu featuring haute cuisine - excellent value for money - English speaking.  Best to make a booking.  Down towards the river near the Pharmacist.

Shopping

There are a couple of small shops in Aubeterre for your basic needs, a couple of bakeries in and off the square, a butchers in the square, a small supermarket at the bottom of the hill and also a well stocked Pharmacy, all which are open most days, just remember everything in France normally shuts between 12pm and 3pm but stays open later, normally until 7 pm.

Sports and Outdoor Activities

Swimming - The river is safe and clean to swim in with life guard assistance in the height of summer.

Fishing - You can fish here but you do need a licence, more info to follow on how to obtain a licence.

Canoeing - Hire a canoe and you can travel as far as 30km downstream to some lovely villages

Tennis - Tennis courts are available by the river near the camping
